Thomas is a graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University and Loma Linda University where he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. Thomas currently practices at Del Mar Family Dentistry. After traveling to Nicaragua for 10 years to provide dental care to underserved communities, he launched Cura Coffee and Cura Smiles in an effort to not only provide sustainable economic support to the local farming community but also sustainable dental care to those farmers and their families. Thomas and his wife, Tara, reside in San Diego and have a 1 year old son.
Mr. Bill Bramley, Chairman of the Board
For the past 41 years, Bill has served as an attorney practicing commercial real estate and business law. During that time frame, he has represented several multi-million dollar companies, and he has appeared before the United States Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Bill has served on a number of other nonprofit corporations, including Via International (Chairman Emeritus), Optimist of Point Loma (current President), and is also on the board of directors of two nonprofits he incorporated that focus upon PTSD and TBI - Physician Advocates for Veterans and Operation Engage America.
Mrs. Raquel Aparicio, Board Member
Raquel is the Associate Director for Undergraduate Admissions at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU). Born and raised in Nicaragua, Raquel's family moved to Los Angeles in 1990 at the end of the Nicaraguan Civil War. She is a first generation college graduate and has been working for PLNU since 2005. Raquel and her husband, Gerardo, have two daughters and enjoy traveling the world in their spare time.
Dr. Jordan Buzzell, Board Member
Jordan is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and has been practicing as a specialist for the past ten years. In 2015, Jordan became adjunct faculty at Point Loma Nazarene University and teaches a one-unit elective course entitled “Serving Through Healing: An Introduction to Health Professions.” He is also dedicated to mission work and has served on dental outreach teams in Kasigluk, Alaska, Haiti, Montserrat, Belize, Vietnam, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Jordan and his wife, Mandy, have a three year old daughter, a newborn son and a dog named Carmen San Diego.
Mr. Steve Bothwell, Board Member
For the last 32 years Steve Bothwell ran a custom molded rubber seal and o-ring manufacturing company that was a major supplier to the automotive, water filtration and food supply industries. His business was sold in 2016. Steve recently started four new social enterprises with the purpose of creating revenue that can financially support Christian institutions and universities. Steve is passionate about transformational character development through building a relationship with Christ.
Mr. Tom Murrell, Board Member
Tom is a Certified Public Accountant whose professional experience includes seven years with one of the “Big Four” accounting firms, CFO for several financial institutions and a small business owner for 20 years. Tom oversees the financial duties of Cura Smiles and is also the accountant for several other local nonprofit organizations. Tom and his wife, Kathleen, live in Bay Park and have twin boys; one resides in Tokyo with his wife and the other is a general manager in the hospitality business in San Diego.
Dr. Larry Michel, Board Member
After 25 years practicing orthodontics in Escondido, California, Larry retired and is now an Assistant Clinical Professor at the USC School of Dentistry. He has been on the Board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego for over 20 years and also serves on the board for CEFA Foundation and Mary Rice Hopkins and Puppets with a Heart Children's Foundation. He and his wife, Debbie, have two grown daughters.
